October in Paris

On the night of October 17, 1961, during a nonviolent protest against the curfew imposed upon them, several dozen Algerians were murdered in Paris by police officers acting under orders from their superiors. Although today this night of terror has been extensively documented in reports, articles, books, and films, the transmission of this memory within French society remains incomplete and contradictory.

To confront the memorials usually erected by states, we felt it necessary to create alternative forms of commemoration, born from urgency, precariousness, energy, and collaboration.

To address the lack of online visual documentation regarding October 17, 1961, a dedicated website highlights how recognition of the event has evolved alongside ongoing struggles. Conceived as a tool for analysis and education, this site encapsulates the complexity of perspectives surrounding the conflict and has successfully brought together participants in a commemorative performance on the streets of Paris.
